What goes on in a Directing Workshop?

Whether it’s a musical or a non-musical play the Director is the person who defines the united vision for a production and, working with the various designers and department heads, they discuss all aspects of a production to ensure that everyone is on the same “page” and everyone is on the same “calendar.”

In this four week workshop participants will explore:

  • text analysis of a non-musical play (musicals will be discussed briefly)

  • how to create a realistic rehearsal schedule and production calendar

  • how to work effectively with the design team (sets, props, costumes, lighting, sound)

  • how to conduct effective rehearsals and create a safe rehearsal room

  • how to work with a wide variety of actors and characters

  • various ways to help the actors to block themselves naturally

  • how to know when to play and when to encourage consistency

  • moving from theory to practice with “live” actors

Each week there will be a mix of “round table” discussions and putting things “on their feet” in a practical manner. Due to the nature of this workshop participants are encouraged to do some homework between classes and, as each class is cumulative regular attendance is recommended. There will be weekly handouts to take away.

Class size is limited to 6 participants maximum. Ages 18+ welcome.
